This is a very interesting couple; they are William and Nancy Ashley. In public, William was the owner of what people thought was his slave, i.e. Nancy. Behind closed doors, they were companions. When William died, he left instructions to his executor John Jackson that the Ashley grave was to be opened and Nancy placed in it with William. A headstone was then created to show their commitment to one another in life and death.
