Hey there,
You're correct about it being a door (brown wood) ... but the handle was silver in colour and on the other side of the door (left) out of view.

And definately no mirrors / windows / other reflective surfaces anywhere in the landing area ... plus no flash used on the camera and no house lights on upstairs or downstairs ... and all internal/external doors were closed to prevent light coming in from outside. (see other photographs that I added from the Red-Eyes case for comparrison).

This image I'm not so sure about. I can see what you're talking about. But if you take the image, re-invert it back to its original. And then bright up the brightness so you can see some detail.

Look in the area that you've circled. I'm thinking it looks like the panels of a door, and perhaps a brass or bronzed door knob. The old style door knob with a handle that you push down, rather than a round one.

I'm assuming the bright area to he left is a mirror?
