As for the lens cap, why bother if you have a good IR camera it shouldn't matter.

There's a give and take with this kind of photo. If you don't use flash, chances are there will be camera shake; coupled with the fact that there'll be a lot of noise [no light source]. By the time the photo goes under Crystal Cross analysis, what will you have left to look at? Even if you mount the point and shoot digital camera on a tripod, it's likely that its capabilities are very limited. I agree that the mist photos would be better without flash, but with the limited ability of a point and shoot digital, there's only so much one can do with it.
Do you have a film camera? If you do, I've got several roles of Fuji Acros B & W film that we could shoot with.
